Windows 8 Gaze Interface: Tobii Eye-Control System To Debut At CES 2012
Pretty soon, you may find yourself launching programs and controlling apps with your eyes. All credit goes to mad-genius team at Tobii. Swedish 'eye tracking' experts Tobii are to unveil a 'Gaze' eye controller for the Microsoft's new Windows 8, which can control a mouse pointer to around a quarter of an inch accuracy.The technology will work with Microsoft's new touchscreen-oriented Windows 8
The technology uses a sensor to track eye movements - and lets users scroll, point and 'click' by blinking.
Its PC controllers are already used in hi-tech 'advert monitoring' where web companies monitor which parts of a page people look at, and as a tool for disabled PC users.
The device works using a webcam-like add-on that you plug into a PC via USB.
Old and busted: Your computer mouse.
New hotness: Your eyes.
The Windows 8 version combines both touchscreen and eye controls. 'Gaze' technology lets users 'point' on screen with their eyes, but also use hands for swiping and dragging objects.
According to the Tobii Web site, the Gaze Interface can be used to control any technology. That includes zooming in and auto-centering maps, as well as controling an input device.
Tobii claims that when people use touchscreens, they also have to hold the computer - which makes the device fiddly. Tobii Technology will demonstrate its Tobii Gaze for Windows 8 for the first time at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
